With the introduction of the new Terra C wheelset, we’re obliterating the longstanding conceptual boundaries between Road, Gravel, and All-Terrain.
When we launched our Terra line of wheels a little over a year ago, the goal was to bring the technology and performance of our road race wheels to the gravel scene. We wanted to emphasize class-leading lightweight and ride quality while also providing the peace of mind durability that comes from thorough r&d and exhaustive testing, both in the lab and in real-world conditions. The Terra CLX and CLX Evo wheels hit all the right targets – jaw-dropping lightweight, amazing ride quality, and workhorse dependability – proving without a doubt that you can have your gravel cake and eat it too.
Our engineers are a restless crew, however. And they don’t like sitting still. So, say hello to the all-new Terra C wheelset; an easy-to-love pair of wheels that laughs at terrain-based limitations. Weight and ride quality are still front and center considerations, but thanks to a new layup process, the strength, and durability on hand extend the rough terrain and loaded capability of the Terra line into some seriously chunky terrain.
Resin Transfer Molding is a new layup process that we’ve been working with. It allows us to more precisely control the carbon fiber and resin in the layup. This means that we can improve strength and consistency, minimizing weight variations between individual rims and optimizing material and resin placement for the best possible strength to weight ratio. This also ensures that the ride quality we engineer into the rim is precisely what we designed it to be.
Featuring the same hook-bead design, 25mm inner width, and 33mm depth as our Terra CLX rim, the RTM-derived Terra C rim nets a solid increase in impact strength at the expense of a scant few grams. This is a strong rim; a rim that is tough enough to handle mountain bike duty. The width, along with the hook-bead, only serves to underscore the versatility of these wheels. They work great with 28c tires and work great with any other tires all the way up to 47mm wide balloons. Wanna run those balloons at 30psi and roll in Cadillac comfort all day long? No problem. Or is 30mm and 90psi more your scene? The hook-bead and precisely engineered rim bed securely keep your tires right where they need to be when you’re dropping a shoulder into those high-load paved corners.
Real-world performance is a phrase we use often. It means that we expect these wheels to perform the way we designed them, but that we also anticipate they will get ridden hard in remote places and be tasked to deliver that engineered in performance and ride quality in some well beyond “normal” conditions. In order to best meet the real-world performance demands that we suspect these wheels might encounter, we exercised sensible restraint and designed the Terra C to be at least as tough as the nails you might find yourself riding over. To that end, we paired this bare-knuckle boxer of a rim with DT-Swiss Competition J-bend spokes. These are some of the most highly regarded spokes in the world, and the J-bend design is the kind of thing that bike shops everywhere ought to have in stock in the event of some stick-in-spoke catastrophe. Following that “better safe than sorry” logic, we didn’t skimp on the spoke count either, opting for 24 spokes in each wheel, front and back. For hubs, we again turned to DT-Swiss and their journeyman tough- 370s.
And that’s about that. Terra C: A wheelset that can take you just about anywhere you might want to go (as well as a few places you might regret trying to go), and bring you back home. Again and again and again.
